Student Testimonial – Mercedes Blanco
After living in the USA for the last two years, I fell in love with the English Language. When I came back to Seville, my hometown, all I wanted was to speak English. I was already a teacher so I thought that teaching English could be the perfect combination; it would allow me to do what I like and travel abroad at the same time. Such was my surprise when I found the TEFL International Academy in Seville, a really nice place in the centre of town that offered the program I needed. I didn’t think twice and I started!
First of all, the TEFL Program is an intensive course that lasts four weeks. When you hear the word intensive, you might not expect just how intensive it truly is, but you will find out during the course that’s for sure. You need to be willing to work hard and dedicate 100% to this course, including weekends. I know it can sound a little scary, but I promise it will be worth it. One of the aspects I liked most about the course is that I was doing things I didn’t know I could do. It is amazing what we are capable of when we are pushed a little further out of our comfort zone. Personally, I work better under pressure sometimes, and I think going through this course is the best option. The teachers are very demanding and the amount of homework you have is considerable, considering the fact you don’t get home until around 9 pm every day.
The TEFL Program prepares you at a high-quality level to become a good teacher. Honestly, I have learnt more in one month in this course than in an entire year of university about how to be a good teacher. They go through every detail you need, from how to write on the whiteboard, to how to manage the behavior of your students. Another great thing about the TEFL Program is that you have the opportunity to practice with real students almost daily and it is an amazing experience because it is in this real-life situation that you learn the most. It doesn’t matter if you have never been a teacher before or if you have no idea how to teach. In the TEFL Program you will learn everything you need from the ground up. This course teaches you how to create a lesson plan, how to use a book to teach, how to recognize if a textbook is good or not, how to make your own materials, your own tools, how to use them, and much more! You could teach English in Thailand, Colombia, Italy or China, and you may find places that give you the materials to do so, and others that give you nothing, either way you will be trained to do your best with your own tools and your own knowledge.
If you decide to challenge yourself and look for great experiences, you should definitely take this course. During the course, one of the best pieces of advice I can give you is to keep in mind, in those moments where you are really exhausted, that it is only a month after all. “Only four weeks,” I remember repeating to myself. Don’t waste your time thinking and complaining about how hard it is, just do it! It is not difficult, but more a question of time management. You will get the rewarding feeling that you deserve every time you see the results of your work and every time your students tell you how much they enjoyed your class.
I finished my course 6 months ago and now I am an English teacher. I work in a wonderful academy and I teach English to children every day. In my work I use a lot of the things that I have learnt in my TEFL course. “I am the happiest person in the world”. This is the only sentence you should keep in your mind once you have graduated.
