How to Prepare for TEFL
How to Prepare for TEFL
Thanks for signing up for TEFL course with us! We can´t wait for you to embark on such a gratifying experience in your life!
That being said, there is a lot to know before starting this journey. I´m imagining you right now reading this blog with excitement, curiosity, and perhaps a bit of nervousness, but relax! We´re here to help give you a little peace of mind before starting the TEFL course. This blog is to help you enter our doors as prepared and confident as possible. So, without further ado, take a peek at some useful tips and tricks to help prepare you for your course.
The first, and most important, key to succeeding in the course is to keep an open mind. Many of you are looking for a career change or study abroad opportunity, making you already open-minded, but focus on staying in that mindset each and every day. As the course entails various classes with an abundance of information, sometimes students are confused about the purpose of certain classes, activities, or concepts. TEFL shows you unconventional, unique ways of being an effective teacher, however it´s often the first time our students hear of such techniques, causing mental blocks when it comes to their own creative development. But hey, isn´t that always how new things start out? We want to revert back to our comfort zones when confronted with new ideas and tasks. Even so, we push ourselves to learn new things that end up becoming fun, helpful, and maybe even a passion.
Another great tip for your teacher boot camp preparation is to stay organized. I cannot emphasize this enough! The next four weeks will bring you loads of beneficial techniques, so you don´t want to lose any of your notes, handouts, or even your own materials. Keep track of all your items in a binder or notebook. I recommend buying ¨fundas¨ (the Spanish word used for plastic sleeve) to help keep everything neat, clean, and in one central location. Oh, and remember all those wonderful note taking skills you learned in your previous schooling? Well, now’s the time to really put those to good use! You´ll want to keep your notes organized, and legible.
The TEFL course entails a select number of classes, however, the order in which our students progress through those classes is arranged according to how we see our students are adapting to and understanding the course. We have a schedule that ideally, we would follow, but the course is tailored to the needs of the students, so it´s very often that the schedule changes. Again, this is for the upmost benefit for the TEFL students. This means that you should be flexible to changes throughout the course. It´s comforting to follow a concrete schedule and know exactly when to expect what, but don´t get your feathers in a ruffle if a few things are shifted here and there.
The last piece of advice I would like to leave you with is a little phrase we like to say here at TEFL, ¨Trust the process and the staff. ¨ There will be times you don´t understand concepts, nor how they will help you in the teaching world. When you feel that way (because you mostly likely will), say this phrase to yourself. Everything you will learn over the next 4 weeks are for a reason. However, sometimes the value doesn´t become clear until after you experienced the full course. Just know that the staff are here to help train you to the best of their abilities. We want you to be nothing but successful, so trust us to help you reach your goals. We won´t let you down!
So, did I scare you? I hope not! This is to help you prepare as best you can before arriving in good ol´ Seville. It may sound a bit like a crazy ride , but hang on and we´ll be sure to get you to destination graduation!
